“Traditional sport in new & exciting format”

The Norwegian Minister of Health Jonas Gahr Støre followed the World Cup race in Oslo and also handed out the prizes. He liked what he saw. “It was interesting to follow the race just like it is with other sports at high level”, he says. He talked to some of the athletes and could watch the runners both live and on the big screen with tracking.

“For me, orienteering is one of the traditional sports. Like in other sports there has been big development and renewal of the sport. Now there is cross-country skiing on Karl Johan Gade (the main street in Oslo) and cycling in the centre of town”, he says.

The Minister has tried ‘tur orienteering’ – orienteering using permanent controls. “When the children were small we did ‘Stifinner’n’ (wayfinding) organised by the club Nydalen. The children liked it”.

– You and orienteering now?

“I am not doing it any more, but I run in the forest. Today I have done that for one and a half hours and that’s also a kind of orienteering”.
