The IOF applies for orienteering to be included in Tokyo 2020 Olympics

In light of the changes implied in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Agenda 2020, the host city of the olympic games may include additional events in the program. The organizers of Tokyo 2020 sent out application documents at the beginning of May 2015 to IOC recognized federations asking them if they wished to submit an application to have events from their sports included in the Tokyo games. The IOF sent in an application prior to the deadline June 8th 2015. In total 26 federations sent in applications for the inclusion of new events.

The IOF application proposes the inclusion of 3 medal events, an individual start middle distance competition for women and men respectively and a mixed sprint relay. Working together with the Japan Orienteering Association (JOA), the IOF has found areas which would work well for these respective formats close to already planned events venues for the Tokyo 2020 games. In this way, orienteering events can be organized with a minimum of additional legacy costs.

The evaluation committee for additional events in Tokyo 2020 will notify the applicants on June 22nd 2015 if they are on the short-list for new events which may be added.
