Second wins for Søes and Kerschbaumer

Signe Søes, Denmark and Gernot Kerschbaumer, Austria, won their qualification heats today in the European Orienteering Championships for the second day in succession. The Long distance qualification races took runners through forest with very varied runnability in the Palmela region of Portugal.

Signe Søes won today by 54 seconds over the Swede Lena Eliasson. The other women’s heat winners were Judith Wyder, Switzerland and Svetlana Mironova, Russia. For the latter the win was a great success – she is IOF World Ranked number 47. World Cup leader Tove Alexandersson was second in her heat.

Gernot Kerschbaumer had the narrowest win of today – he was just 3 seconds faster than Olav Lundanes, Norway. William Lind, Sweden and Fredric Portin, Finland had more comfortable victories in their heats.

Kiril Nikolov, Bugaria, placed 20th in the IOF World Rankings, was the only well-known name not to reach the final which will take place on Tuesday.

The last qualification race, the Sprint, takes place tomorrow.

There are more reports from the European Championships in the ‘Around the Arena’ section at the foot of the Home page.
