Norway and Finland host World Cup Round 3

A Middle and a Long distance race in Norway and a city Sprint in Finland make up the third round of the 2014 World Cup starting tomorrow, with competitors from 20 nations taking part.

Kongsberg, well-known by orienteers, is the venue in Norway for the first two races on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday a Middle distance race with 2-minute interval individual start will be held, with course lengths of 4.6 km for women and 5.9 km for men. The start order is the reverse standing of the IOF Middle/Long World Rankings as published on 1st June.

Sunday’s Long distance race has a 3-minute start interval with courses for women of 8.9 km with 350 m climb and for men, 14.0 km with 530 m climb. There will be three start groups for this race.

Both races will take place in typical Norwegian forest terrain, quite hilly in parts with mainly good runnability.

Competitors then transfer to Imatra in Finland for a Sprint with a one-heat qualification and a final on Wednesday. The following day, a mixed sprint relay will be held (not part of the World Cup) as training for its introduction into the World Championships programme in Italy next month.

In the World Cup standings, Daniel Hubmann from Switzerland has a big lead after winning the first World Cup race in Turkey and both the Middle and Long races at the European Championships. Oleksandr Kratov, Ukraine is in second place and Fabian Hertner, Switzerland in third. Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson and Lena Eliasson head the women’s standings with Alexandersson ahead by 10 points; Judith wider, Switzerland is placed third.

Reports and pictures will appear in the main news and the ‘Around the Arena’ sections of this website after each race.
