No more “zero points” World Ranking Events
As the new Orienteering World Ranking system comes into effect on January 1, 2014, one of the major changes is that there will no longer be any races where the competitors do not score points. In a standard World Ranking Event (WRE), the winners are guaranteed at least 800 points, and each participant at least 10 points. Please read more about the details in the previous news article.
IOF Vice President Mike Dowling, responsible for the World Ranking Review in IOF Council, comments:
“The IOF initiated the review of the Foot Orienteering World Ranking Review Project to address a number of issues. Among these were:
- to ensure that all WREs in all member Federations result in competitors receiving ranking points for finishing the race.
- to better match ranking point outcomes to the status of the IOF major events such as World Championships, World Cup, Regional Championships and other major IOF events such as our participation in The World Games.
- to meet the demands of the new WOC model for middle/long start order
- to recognise that there is a measure of specialisation and differential between urban and forest formats of our sport
- to provide more opportunities for a greater diversity of top level orienteers to be recognised.
- to make it clearer the ranking points that can be expected from each of the different levels of IOF events for the winners of WR races.”
To show how the new system will influence current lists, here is a sample testing of World Ranking on 13 October 2013, with the new system:
