New ISOM 2017, finally!

ISOM 2017, the International Specification for Orienteering Maps, was approved by the IOF Council a few weeks ago. The orienteering community, especially the mapping community, has been looking forward to the new, or at least updated, standard for a long time. The preparation of a new ISOM started already back in 2006, initiated by the IOF Map Commission. It has been an extensive process, because mappers are like artists, with very strong personal views and ideas. As well as the work inside our Map Commission, we have also done several consultation rounds with Member Federations. Additional input from all over the world did not make the work for the Map Commission any easier. Finally, after long and sometimes hard discussions, the compromise was found and the new ISOM was presented for Council approval.  On behalf of the IOF Council, I would like to thank all mappers who have contributed their time and ideas over the years. Our special appreciation and thanks go to the former chair of IOF Map Commission Håvard Tveite, who lead a difficult process for a whole decade.

I’m not a mapping specialist, but I understand that there were no big changes compared to the previous ISOM 2000, released 17 years ago. Instead, there are a lot of small improvements and adjustments, partly also related to the recent developments in printing technology. The new ISOM 2017 will not change the general look of orienteering map for the average orienteer, but is an important milestone in the development of our mapping standards.
