National quotas for WOC 2017

The results of the 2016 World Championships have decided the national quotas for WOC 2017. Eight countries are in division 1 and can field three runners in the middle and the long distance; the next 14 countries are in division 2 and can field two runners in each of these races. Remaining countries are in division 3 and can field one runner in each race. In addition to this, there will be personal places for the 2016 World Champions in the middle and long distance and for regional champions in the 12 months before the 2017 event.

A string of good performances at WOC 2016 saw the French women promoted to division 1, with a very clear margin (76 points) over their nearest challengers, Latvia. For most of the WOC 2016 week it looked like they would be replacing Great Britain, but the disqualification of the Czech Republic’s relay team saw the Czechs drop to division 2 for 2017 with the British remaining in Division 1.

Italy’s tenth place in the women’s relay, and top-ten results in both the middle and long distance for Anastasia Denisova of Belarus, saw those countries promoted from division 3 to division 2. The United States were clearly the lowest scorers in division 2 and will drop to division 3 for 2017. They will be joined by Poland, who needed to beat Austria by seven places in the relay to stay up but only managed to do it by two.

The closest contest was for relegation from men’s division 2, where Belarus, Italy and Germany were separated by 12 points (equivalent to three relay places). Germany ran well in the relay but not well enough to stay up, with Belarus’s win over Italy enough also to drop the Italians to division 3 for 2017. Replacing Germany and Italy in division 2 will be Ireland and Australia. They prevailed in a three-way contest with Belgium, whose chances were badly damaged by Yannick Michiels’ absence through injury. It was more straightforward at the division 1/division 2 boundary, with Estonia comfortably promoted at Ukraine’s expense (although Estonia are in any case entitled to three runners in 2017 as hosts).

The national quotas will be supplemented by regional champions in four regions. The 2016 Asian Championships have already taken place, and more personal places will be decided in the Regional Championships of North America (in September), South America (in October) and Oceania (in April).
