Military World Championships: Estonia and Switzerland win relays

The CISM Championships being held in Austria concluded today with the relays. The Estonian military team was the surprise winner of the women’s relay, beating the very strong Russian team by almost 2 minutes. The Swiss team, favourites for the men’s title, duly won with Russia again in second place.

Estonia was represented by Kirti Rebane, Laura Joonas and Annika Rihma, and Annika finished 1.50 ahead of Natalia Efimova. The Russians had Galina Vinogradova on first leg and Yulia Novikova on second. Lithuania took the bronze medals.

In the men’s race both the Swiss and the Russian teams contained two brothers. For Switzerland they were Andreas and Matthias Kyburz on 1st and 3rd legs with Fabian Hertner taking the middle leg. Russia had Leonid and Valentin Novikov on the first two legs, with Andrey Khramov running last leg. The time difference at the end was 2.40. Estonia did well in this race too, coming third just 7 seconds behind Russia.
