Lundanes back on track

Last season Olav Lundanes wasn’t very visible on the international scene. But in the Long distance today the Norwegian was just 25 seconds behind the gold winner.

“It was a good race. I can’t really remember any mistakes except maybe some seconds and maybe a not so good route choice”, he says.

The 26-year-old Norwegian won the Long distance at the World Championships (WOC) both in 2010 and 2012. In 2013 there was a conflict with the Norwegian head coach. Lundanes lost motivation, didn’t go to WOC and had to take some time out. He took part in the Norwegian Championships in the autumn and now he is back at international level.

The big goal is three medals at WOC, and he believes he will be in better shape in Italy than in Portugal. “I was in better shape in February than I am now”, he says.

In March he had some sickness and injuries and he couldn’t do what he wanted in training. Now he can do that again, and he ran a really good race on the Long distance – 20.6 kilometres with 32 controls. In kilometres it is the longest distance at EOC and WOC ever.

It was open forest and easy to run, but in the warm weather, more than 20 plus, it was a real challenge. “In two periods of the race I became very tired and couldn’t go as hard as I wanted”, the Norwegian says.
