JWOC Middle Distance Final: three gold medal winners!

A technically challenging Middle Distance Final in the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria ended today with two women gold medallists: Sina Tommer, Switzerland and Sara Hagström, Sweden recorded exactly the same time for the 3.1 km course. The men’s title went to Miika Kirmula, Finland.

Sina Tommer was 6th starter on the course today, and after finishing in what seemed a very good time she had to wait one hour and three-quarters before Sprint champion Sara Hagström, last-but-two of the 60 starters, was chasing up the run-in on a very similar time frame – which at the finish line turned out to be identical. The closest challenger and therefore bronze medallist was the Swede Andrea Svensson, who like Sara Hagström had won her qualification heat yesterday. She finished 1.13 down on the winning time. Sara Hagström has finished the individual races with 2 gold medals and 1 silver: impressive!

Miika Kirmula was also a heat winner, and he maintained his form today on the 3.8 km course (220 m of climb) with a 1.21 victory over the Italian Riccardo Scalet. The bronze medal also went to Finland, in the hands of Olli Ojanaho, who was 10 seconds slower than Scalet.

In addition to the silver medal for Italy, three nations will be particularly pleased to have achieved podium placings today: Great Britain in the women’s race (Zoe Harding) and Austria and New Zealand in the men’s (Xander Berger and Nick Hann).

One race remains in the Championships: the Relay, being held tomorrow morning at Borovets.
