Is your school the best at orienteering?

Every second year it is decided which school has the best orienteers at the World Schools Championships Orienteering. Palermo in Italy are ready for the next edition in April 2017.

Schools from all over the world are invited to the biannual World Schools Championships Orienteering (WSCO) taking place 22-28 April 2017. Two orienteering championships and different cultural activities are scheduled when the International School Sports Federation (ISF) in cooperation with the IOF organize the 17th edition of WSCO around the Sicilian city of Palermo in Italy.

There will be competed in eight different classes. Each student may only compete in one team.

The competition is open to both school teams and selected teams in both sexes and two age groups. Added up it gives eight different classes. Each country may enter one team per class with up to five persons per team.  All competitors of the school team must have been enrolled the same school since the beginning of the school year and all competitors of the selected team must have been enrolled at a school in the country concerned since the beginning of the school year.

The competitors participate individually in a Middle and a Long distance. The three best individual times of both races for each team are added and the team with the fastest time win their respectively classes.

As well as the two competitions, cultural activities are planned throughout the week. The last day before departure will consist of a ‘Friendship Team Event’ that will let the young runners mingle across nationality more than they already have done during the week.

In 2015, when WSCO last time took place, 22 different countries had teams in the competition around Kemer in Turkey. No country was superior and the eight classes had six different countries as winners. Sweden and England won two classes each while France, Spain, New Zealand and Austria got one overall class victory each.
