Independent Investigation Panel begins its work

The independent investigation panel that was appointed by the IOF Council following the tragic death of Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis has now begun its work.

The panel is tasked to investigate and assess the Middle distance competition at the World Games in Chengdu, China in August 2025.

It consists of Leanne O’Leary (chairperson), Mats Börjesson (member) and Graham Gristwood (member) and met in the beginning of November to agree on the scope for the investigation.

The purpose of the review is to:

– Examine the Event conditions and organization and ascertain what happened
– Consider whether the IOF complied with all relevant IOF regulations and World Games regulations
– Consider what lessons, if any, can be learned to ensure the health and safety of orienteering athletes at future competitions
– Make recommendations as appropriate.

The panel’s work will result in a written report, which will be published by the IOF. Furthermore, the IOF shall carefully consider any panel recommendations and decide how these will be implemented.

There is no formal deadline set for when the panel will conclude its work, but it is expected to do so in early 2026.
