Farewell to Peo Bengtsson, Global Orienteering Pioneer
The International Orienteering Federation mourns the passing of Per-Olof ”Peo” Bengtsson (1933-2025), one of the true pioneers in the history of orienteering.
Peo began orienteering in his home country of Sweden in 1949 and ended up dedicating his life to developing and spreading the sport worldwide. Over several decades, he organized hundreds of journeys that introduced and strengthened the sport in countries on every continenent, making an unparalleled contribution to the global growth of the sport. Along the way, he managed to practice orienteering in 105 different countries.
In 1965 he was also a founding force behind O-Ringen, the iconic Swedish orienteering festival that has become the world’s largest annual orienteering event.
Beyond organisational achievements, Peo remained actively engaged in competition well into his later years. He participated as recently as August at the World Masters Orienteering Championships in Spain and won numerous WMOC-medals over the years.
Peo Bengtsson’s vision, enthusiasm, and tireless work helped shape orienteering into the truly international sport it is today. His legacy will live on through the countless athletes, organisers, and federations he inspired.
In recognition of his lifelong commitment, Peo received the IOF Bronze Pin (1981) and Silver Pin (1985), and later became the first-ever recipient of the IOF Global Development Award in 2018 (photo) to honour his efforts in introducing and developing orienteering around the world.

The IOF extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the global orienteering community.
