Double Swedish victory in sprint

It was a golden day for Sweden at the World Ski Orienteering Championships. Sprint queen Tove Alexandersson won again and in the men’s race the Swede Ulrik Nordberg was the strongest sprinter.

Tove Alexandersson won her second gold medal in two days at World Ski Orienteering Championships in Krasnojarsk, Russia. Alexandersson was eight seconds faster than Polina Frolova, Russia. Finnish Salla Koskela took the bronze medal and the medal countries in the womens’s race were exactly the same as yesterday’s Sprint Relay. Sprint is definitely Tove’s favourite distance and she has won the last four sprint golds at World Ski Orienteering Championships (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017).

In the men’s class it looked like a Russian triple victory until the very last starter Ulrik Nordberg, Sweden, finished. Nordberg was two seconds faster than the big Russian star Andrey Lamov. Sergey Gorlanov won the bronze medal and his team mate Russian Kiril Veselov missed the medals with two seconds.

A really good start for the Swedish team winning three of three possible gold medals so far.

The championships continue tomorrow, 9 March, with the women’s middle distance. Make sure you don’t miss out, follow the races on LIVE Orienteering.

The start times this week, local time, are:

  • Thurs. 9 March, women’s Middle Distance 15.00
  • Fri. 10 March, men’s Middle Distance 15.00
  • Sat. 11 March, Long Distance: women mass start 15.00, men 15.45
  • Sun. 12 March, Relay: women mass start 1400, men 15.45

Krasnoyarsk is 6 hours ahead of Central European Time (CET).
