Council minutes highlights

Many important topics were on the agenda for the recent IOF Council Meeting in Warsaw, 20-21 January. Here is a summary of some key decisions from the meeting.

  • The Council discussed the bid from Sweden for the World Ski Orienteering Championships 2019, and viewed the application favourably. However, since the application incorporates more events than just the WSOC, Council decided they could not approve the application until the SkiO Commission had evaluated the impact on the overall season 2019. The SkiO Commission evaluation is scheduled to be complete by 15 February, after which the Council will make a final decision.
  • Council appointed the Czech Republic as host of the 2018 IOF General Assembly. It will take place in Prague, 5-7 October. The general Assembly will be held in conjunction with the World Cup Final in orienteering, an addition to the previously communicated World Cup programme for 2018.
  • Council approved the proposed World Masters Orienteering Championships programme, which will be introduced from WMOC 2018 in Denmark. The programme will consist of Sprint Qualification, Sprint Final, a rest day, Forest Qualification, Middle Distance Final, another rest day, and finally the Long Distance Final. The Middle Distance Final will also give an opportunity to requalify for the Long Distance Final for participants who may have had a poor or missing qualification result. The FootO Commission is now tasked with implementation of these decisions.
  • After reviewing the results of the consultation carried out with member federations regarding the IOF strategy for WMOC and WMG in the future, Council decided that, after the WMG 2017, the WMOC will be held as an annual stand-alone IOF major event, essentially separating WMOC from the World Masters Games. However, orienteering will still be part of the WMG, but the IOF World Masters Orienteering Championships will not be an incorporated part of the event, as it is today. This decision needs to be verified by the General Assembly in 2018.
  • All principles in the ISOM 2017 are now approved by Council. The Standard will undergo a final editing phase before final approval and publication.
  • Following a presentation from the TrailO Commission, Council made a principle decision to instate a World Ranking system in TrailO. The details will now be worked out by the TrailO Commission, with the intention to introduce TrailO World Ranking Events from 2018.
