Brian Porteous: “I am really getting excited”

At my age it is difficult sometimes to get too excited but I am really getting excited about World Orienteering Day! 11 May 2016 will give us the chance to really demonstrate that we are a truly global sport and I am especially excited to see the preparations which are going on all around the world to have the maximum number of people enjoying our sport on that day. The new website dedicated to the day is now up and running and if you have not visited it yet then please do so and tell your friends about what we are doing.

To those working hard in federations, clubs and schools to make World Orienteering Day a great success I say thank you for all your efforts. If you  are reading this and do not know of any World Orienteering Day activities in your area then why not organise a small event in partnership with a local school? I have often said that orienteering is one of the best kept sporting secrets in the world – this is our chance to share that secret with many people on every continent. Let’s make it an outstanding success and show that our target of 250,000 participants on that day was really pretty modest.

Yes – I really should be excited and so should all of us involved in the world orienteering family about 11 May 2016.
