World MTB Orienteering Championships: Russia wins mixed sprint relay

The first event in this year’s MTBO Championships in Poland was a non-medal race – a mixed sprint relay, won by Russia by a convincing margin of 1 minute and 15 seconds over France.

This 2-person relay race was over four legs, taken in the order woman-man-woman-man. The winning team of Tatiana Repina and Ruslan Gritsan took 51.30 for the four legs, a very clear victory over France (Hana Garde and Baptiste Fuchs). Third place was taken by Denmark, and the Russians showed that they have brought a very strong team to Poland in taking fourth place ahead of Lithuania and Finland. The Czech Republic was the sixth nation to finish.

First over the line at the end of the first leg was Emily Benham, Great Britain, a favourite for individual medals this week and the only rider to complete this leg in under 10 minutes.

Similar relay races for Junior, Youth and Masters categories were also held today; teams representing France had the distinction of coming second in all of them! Winners were Junior: Austria; Youth: Russia; Masters: Australia.

Tomorrow the first medal race, the Sprint, takes place. Courses are 7 km (men) and 5.4 km (women) with an estimated winning time of 20-25 minutes. The first start is at 9.30 local time.
