World Cup: Niggli and Kyburz take final honours

Simone Niggli achieved her season’s final goal today – winning the Sprint in Baden and also the World Cup overall. Tove Alexandersson, who needed to finish second to remain ahead if Simone won, could only manage fourth place. Matthias Kyburz, leader in the men’s standings before today, rounded off a superb season in style with a resounding victory.

Simone bowed out of international competition with a clear victory by 16 seconds over compatriot Judith Wyder, with the ever-improving Dane Emma Klingenberg third. Switzerland had four in the first six in the women’s race.

Even better for the host country in the men’s race – five in the top six, just as yesterday. Martin Hubmann was in second place, 22 seconds slower than Kyburz, and Jonas Leandersson, Sweden was third.

Today’s results mean that behind the 2013 World Cup winners Simone Niggli and Matthias Kyburz are the Swedes Tove Alexandersson and Annika Billstam in the women’s list and the Swiss athletes Daniel Hubmann and Fabian Hertner in the men’s. Matthias Merz finished his international career today with a fourth placing in the overall standings.
