World Cup in Tasmania: strong start for Swiss

Swiss runners dominated the top positions in today’s Sprint Qualification, with 4 women and 4 men occupying top-three places in the heats.

Four very well-known names took victory in the four qualifying heats, from which the top 20 go through to the final with the heat winners starting last. In the women’s heats Tove Alexandersson SWE and Judith Wyder SUI were fastest, Alexandersson by 2 seconds and Wyder a rather more comfortable 16. Lizzie Ingham, NZL was 4th in her heat and Hanny Allston, AUS was 6th. Two more Australians, Jasmine Neve and Rachel Effeney, got into the top ten.

Winners of the men’s heats were Matthias Kyburz SUI by 27 seconds and Olav Lundanes NOR by just 2 seconds. Australians Ian Lawford, Lachlan Dow and Julian Dent finished in 9th, 10th and 11th places respectively. Sprint World Champion Søren Bobach DEN lost a lot of time through a big mistake early on and was relieved to eventually qualify for the final in 18th place in his heat.

The Sprint Final, the first race giving World Cup points, takes place tomorrow starting at 9.00 local time on the Newnham Campus of the University of Tasmania in Launceston.
