Sprint Relay: series win for Denmark by smallest possible margin

Denmark is tonight toasting its second team, which clinched overall victory by finishing fourth in today’s final race in Basel, Switzerland, winning a sprint finish with France by 1 second after Denmark’s first team had been disqualified.

Switzerland won today’s race by 35 seconds, with Sweden second and the Swiss second team in third place. There was high drama in the closing stages when it was announced that Søren Bobach, who had come in in second place at the end of the third leg, was disqualified after missing out control 24. Denmark 2’s final leg runner, Stine Bagger Hagner, learnt in the arena passage that she needed to catch the runner in front, France’s Lea Vercellotti, to bring overall victory to Denmark. Despite an error shortly before the end, Stine made it to the finish line just in front.

Denmark needed to be third today if Switzerland won the race, so Stine’s success was decisive. Denmark head the final standings by 10 points with Sweden and Switzerland sharing second place.

Martin Hubmann brought Switzerland in front on the second leg and his team held the lead from then on. Sweden came into second place on the third leg. Denmark 2 was in second place after the first and second legs and dropped to fifth on the third. France was in second place after three legs.
