Ski Orienteering World Cup: titles to Alexandersson and Lamov

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden and Andrey Lamov, Russia won the IOF Ski Orienteering World Cup 2017-2018.

Alexandersson won 6 of 9 individual races this season and secured an overall win before the final individual race of the season.

Mariya Kechkina of Russia finished second in the overall standings. The Russian athlete had a great season with 5 second places and a win in the Long distance at the European Ski Orienteering Championships in Bulgaria.

The third place winner in the women’s class was decided only on the very last individual race of the season. Salla Koskela, Finland won the Long distance at the World Cup final in Craftsbury, Vermont, USA and overtook Magdalena Olsson, Sweden who finished this race in 7th position.

Women overall standings

1.       Tove Alexandersson SWE 405 points

2.       Mariya Kechkina RUS 350 points

3.       Salla Koskela FIN 312 points

4.       Magdalena Olsson SWE 286 points

5.       Linda Lindkvist SWE 242 points

6.       Tatyana Oborina RUS 227 points

As in the women’s class, the men’s champion was also known before the final race of the World Cup.

Andrey Lamov of Russia won the first 3 races of the season, then added the European Champion title in the Middle distance and a win in the Sprint race at the World Cup final.

Erik Rost, Sweden ended in a second position in the overall World Cup standings. Rost started a season a little bit slowly, but then won the Long distance at the European Ski Orienteering Championships and the two last individual races of the season in Craftsbury – Middle and Long distances.

A bronze medal in the last race of the season, Long distance, and a win in the Sprint at the European Championships let the Russian veteran Eduard Khrennikov to finish the season in the bronze medal position.

3.       Eduard Khrennikov RUS 262 points

4.       Stanimir Belomazhev BUL 262 points

5.       Lars Moholdt NOR 259 points

6.       Gion Schnyder SUI 245 points

In a team competition the Team World Cup title went to Sweden. The Swedish athletes won both Mixed Sprint Relay races of the season.

5.       Czech Republic 33 points

6.       Bulgaria 30 points

The IOF Ski Orienteering World Cup season 2017-2018 consists of 3 rounds, 9 individual races and 4 team events (2 mixed sprint relays and 1 relay for men and women).
