Nordic Tour moves on to Finland

Finland is in focus today and tomorrow with the last two events of the Nordic Tour (second round of the 2013 World Cup) taking place in and around Turku. Several of the teams taking part will also be attending training camps and holding selection races prior to the World Championships to be held in Finland next month.

Today’s event is a two-stage sprint: qualification in the morning (start order the reverse of the World Cup standings) and final in the afternoon for the top 30 finishers in the qualification. The final will be televised by the Finnish TV company YLE starting at 15.00 Finnish time and can be followed through a link from the ‘Live Center’ on the Nordic Tour website www.nordicorienteeringtour.com.

The women’s qualification race was won by Simone Niggli, Switzerland by just one second ahead of Tove Alexandersson, Sweden, and third was another Swede, Annika Billstam. Fifth-placed Lina Strand completed a trio for Sweden in the top six; fourth and sixth places were taken by two Britons, Tessa Hill and Cath Taylor.

Sweden also had success in the men’s qualification with the first two places held by Jerker Lysell and Jonas Leandersson. Home runner Mårten Boström was third, Frédéric Tranchand (France) fourth, and fifth place was shared by Murray Strain, Great Britain and Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland.
