Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships 2019 also a financial success

The Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships 2019 in Østfold, Norway was the first championships organised in accordance with the new championships model, with focus on forest and sprint formats in alternating years. According to a press release today from the organisers the event was not only a sporting success.

Press release by Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships 2019:
WOC 2019 turned out a huge success in all aspects, even economically. The organisers are NOK 1,5 million (150 000 euro) on the plus side, money that will go back to the organising clubs from Østfold.

Eight clubs along with the Østfold Orienteering Union are the owners of the WOC organisation. One of the clubs looking forward to an extra pay-check for Christmas is OK Moss.
-We’re very happy that the clubs get something back for all the effort put in by our members, says chairman of OK Moss Hanne G. Wold. -And the amount is astonishing!

How will the money be spent?
-We didn’t dare calculating in the budgets for this kind of a plus result, so the members will have their say concerning how to spend the money wisely. Recruiting work and club development are two thoughts that come to my mind, Wold says.

– On behalf of the IOF we would like to congratulate the Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships 2019 organisation in Østfold not only on a fantastic week of competitions but also the very positive economic result, says IOF Secretary General Tom Hollowell.

One of the key objectives in the IOFs new World Orienteering Championships model, with separate forest and sprint championships, has been to improve the financial sustainability of the event.

– The result achieved by the Norwegian organisers is further proof that the new model has clear merits in this regard. Hosting a World Orienteering Championships should leave a positive legacy and the financial result is an important part of that. says Tom Hollowell.
