09.07.2013 World Orienteering Championships, Long distance final: another gold for Niggli and Gueorgiou
Simone Niggli won World Championships gold medal number 22 in today’s Long distance final, running 13.4 km in 1:20:02 to win by 1 second under 3 minutes. Thierry Gueorgiou, France was a clear winner of the men’s race, his sublime technique and fitness earning him victory by 1 minute 18 seconds over home favourite Jani Lakanen.

08.07.2013 World Orienteering Championships, Sprint final: 21st gold for Simone Niggli, 1st for Boström
The Sprint finals with the start and finish in a packed baseball stadium in Sotkamo, Finland this evening were won by Simone Niggli, Switzerland and Mårten Boström from the home country. Niggli’s win was by 8.1 seconds whilst Boström’s was even more convincing, 17.1 seconds.

The Sprint finals with the start and finish in a packed baseball stadium in Sotkamo, Finland this evening were won by Simone Niggli, Switzerland and Mårten Boström from the home country. Niggli’s win was by 8.1 seconds whilst Boström’s was even more convincing, 17.1 seconds.

08.07.2013 World Orienteering Championships, men’s sprint qualification: defending champion safely through
Defending sprint world champion Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland qualified easily for this evening’s final, finishing 2 seconds down on the Swedish sprint star Jerker Lysell in his heat. The other heat winners were Rasmus Thrane Hansen, Denmark and Öystein Kvaal Österbö, Norway, who both had clear victories.

08.07.2013 World Orienteering Championships, women’s sprint qualification: win again for Simone Niggli
Defending Sprint World Champion Simone Niggli, Switzerland won her heat in the qualification this morning, by the big margin of 35 seconds. The other heat winners, and therefore last starters in the final this evening, are Galina Vinogradova, Russia and Maja Alm, Denmark.

Last year it was clear only just before the WOC started that Thierry Gueorgiou could take part, since he had had a lot of injuries. This year there is no doubt that he can run and do very well. Twenty-three nations in the women’s final and twenty-four in the men’s. Those are the bare statistics from a warm and dry race-day in Vuokatti, Finland, where the first race has taken place today.
