For the first time in China – World Cup 2019 goes to Asia

In connection with the World Ranking Events held in the Guangdong province of China last week, the Orienteering Association of China and the International Orienteering Federation reached an agreement to organize the final round of the Orienteering World Cup in 2019.

It will be not only the first ever for the Orienteering World Cup in China but also the first major IOF event with global participation in this most populated country in the world. Only regional championships and world ranking events have been held previously in China.

“It will be the first-ever major IOF event in China. The programme is not finally defined yet, but it will certainly have a sprint focus. Possibly a middle distance race can be held if appropriate terrain can be found. But most likely the programme will be the same as at the World Orienteering Championships 2020. There is no shortage of good sprint venues in China”, Tom Hollowell, IOF Secretary General/CEO says.

The final World Cup round will be held in the last part of October 2019 in and around Guangzhou city and the Guangdong Province. The exact dates of the competitions will be known after consultation with the organizers of the 7th CISM World Games and IOF member federations. The 7th CISM World Games will be held in Wuhan City of China from 18 to 27 October 2019 and orienteering will be part of the games programme. This provides an excellent opportunity for coordination between the 2 international events to be held in China.

With this appointment the Orienteering World Cup programme for 2019 is complete.

The first round will be held in Helsinki, Finland from 6 to 11 June 2019.

The Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships in Norway from 13 to 18 August 2019 will constitute Orienteering World Cup Round 2.

Orienteering World Cup Round 3 will be held in Switzerland from 26 to 29 September 2019.
