First World Championship event for Lithuania

The World Trail Orienteering Championships (WTOC) is being held this coming week in Lithuania. This is the first time the country has organised an orienteering event at this level. Twenty-five nations have entered competitors.

The club OSK Falco is responsible for this year’s WTOC, which will be centred on the spa town of Birštonas. There are three types of competition – TempO, where decision-making is timed throughout, PreO which is the ‘classic’ form of the sport and a Relay, the second year for this newest format.

77 competitors have signed up for the TempO competition to be held on Tuesday. There is a qualification competition in the morning, after which the best 36 competitors compete in the Final later in the day. These competitions will take place in an urban area with parks and includes some “subtle terrain”, as the final Bulletin puts it.

The PreO is in two stages over two days. There are 38 entered in the Paralympic class and 66 in the Open. The first day is in a mix of open land and mature forest, whilst the second day is on mainly open land with many vegetation details.

The Relay, for teams of three, takes place on a golf course – similar terrain to that for the PreO in Croatia two years ago. 32 teams are entered for this competition.

The event can be followed on the website, and reports will be published daily on the IOF websites.
