First WOC – into Sprint Final

Giacomo Zagonei had his first WOC start on Friday evening. He felt it was a first time championship in the start, but he managed well. There will be two Italians in the Final.

The 22-year-old is from Primiero, where JWOC was in 2009. At that time he was too young to take part. Last year he wasn’t in the Italian team at WOC on home ground, but now the young senior is fighting among the very best in the world.

Giacomo had a very good first race in the senior WOC. “I felt that it was not so fast orienteering at the first control, but maybe it was also a bit of a mental feeling. After that it went very well”, he says.

He was just inside in the final when he finished and even though he was one of the latest starters, there were some exciting minutes: will he be in the final? Yes, the Italian got the shared 13th place in heat two. 15 went through to the final.

It was really close in the group. Had he used 3 seconds more, he would have been watching his first individual Final instead of taking part. “It will be a tough Final”, he says.

In the Final there will be two Italian men. Junior Riccado Scalet, last year’s bronze winner on the Middle Distance at JWOC, is also in the Final. Just as his team-mate Giacomo, he got the shared 13th place.

The two young Italians took their hands into each other with satisfaction after the race.
