A word from the president

A historical step for Ski orienteering

I do not think I have ever been part of making history before! As I write these words I am in Tula in Russia at the first ever FISU World University Ski Orienteering Championships – a historical step for Ski orienteering. The IOF has a very strong partnership with FISU and of course, orienteering is a popular sport with students in the summer and the winter.

In June 2013 in Kazan, Russia, I was privileged to be able, with Hans Jorgen Kvale, to make a presentation to the FISU board to argue for World Student Championships in our winter discipline and also for our inclusion in the 2019 Winter Universiade. We were very pleased to be successful in our bid and also by the enthusiastic support from the FISU board.

Now, in three short years, here we are and the first championships are about to happen.

With 12 countries represented at this first event from  two IOF regions, we have made a good start and I hope that many more countries will take part in the second championships in 2018 in Estonia before we reach the Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia in 2019.

It is really important for our global objectives to be part of multi sport organisations and bodies like FISU and the military sports organisation CISM, give us a real platform to reach further countries in all disciplines. This in turn helps with our Olympic ambitions.

One comment to make for those of our members who do not have good contacts with the national university sports organisation in their country – please make contact and encourage participation in both the winter and summer World University Orienteering Championships.

Thank you then to FISU, our Russian Federation organisers and all those who have supported them for this important historical step in ski orienteering.
